The RNLI’s impressive new pier on Victoria Embankment played host to a well‑attended Emergency Services training session on Tuesday 17 February, bringing together teams from the RNLI, the Metropolitan Police Marine Policing Unit, and the London Fire Brigade.
More than 40 Masters, crew and river users joined the event, making it one of our busiest sessions to date and a fitting first event for the new pier.
Attendees heard a series of insightful presentations from each of the emergency services. Highlights included a look back at the long and fascinating histories of both the RNLI and the Marine Police on the Thames, alongside up‑to‑date guidance on water safety and counter‑terrorism measures from all three emergency services.
Blue Davies of the Thames Skills Academy commented:
“Not only is this an opportunity to hear directly from the Emergency Services on the Thames, but it also gives us a chance to network and catch up with other Masters and river users, in a really impressive setting on the river.”
Billy Sergeant from the Marine Policing Unit outlined the implications of the new Terrorism (Protection of Premises) Act – known as Martyn’s Law – explaining that all premises will be required to comply with the legislation. He also signposted attendees to the ProtectUK website, where detailed guidance is available. These are posted on the CPD website too.
We extend our thanks to Kevin Maynard, Station Manager at RNLI Tower Pier, for hosting the session and supporting another successful Thames CPD event.
